P.S.101 History Chronology

1908 Land for a school in Forest Hills Gardens was originally proposed and set aside as early as 1908 ("Block 10"). The supervising architect, Grosvenor Atterbury, and landscaper Frederick Olmstead, believed in play areas, but did not envision outdoor play areas.

December 1910-1913 A portable, 2-room school existed, exact location unknown, though some seniors in our community believe the school was located on land where Church in the Gardens stands today. There is no record of acknowledgement by the NYC BOE for this school. The school opened with 75 students.

1914 The Little Red Schoolhouse is constructed on Block 10 at Russell Place and Children's Lane (approximately where the school gym is currently located). Described as a 4-room portable building, it accommodated children through 8th grade. Capacity: 160 (See Historical Pics 101/ Forest Hills-PS101 photo)

May 20 , 1914 The Little Red Schoolhouse opens and is officially recognized as a public school by the NYC Board of Education. It is not given a name. It is annexed to Public School 3 at Colonial Ave and Euclid St, Forest Hills, NY (meaning the schools share a principal).

January 11, 1916 The Little Red School house becomes an independent school to be known as Public School 101 (meaning will have its own principal).

July 8, 1916 The Little Red School House was discovered on fire at 2:42 am and was not fully extinguished until 5:30 am. It cost the city $1,500 to repair the damage. The school was ready to open by the beginning of the next school year.

January 11, 1917 NYC BOE recommends that P.S. 3 and P.S. 99 no longer be independent organizations and made annexes of P.S. 101. It appears the decision to annex is related to the fact that all three schools are currently housed in low capacity, temporary buildings and would be more effective if managed by one principal until the schools construct permanent buildings. The schools will keep their independent names.

January 23, 1917 Because the permanent structure for P.S. 3 will be completed well before either P.S. 101 or P.S. 99, the NYC BOE instead recommends that P.S. 3 should be the main school, and P.S 99 and P.S. 101 be annexed to P.S. 3.

September 1924 There are 217 children enrolled at P.S. 101. The 1920 census shows 2,000 residents of Forest Hills.

September 3, 1925 Construction of our current building begins. Estimated cost, $635,000.00. When our current building was designed and built, it was expected to accommodate 1,263 students in grades K-8 (currently our enrollment is around 590, K-6).

September 12, 1927 P.S. 101Q moves into it's current building, also located in Block 10, as a K-8 school.

1942 Number of children enrolled at P.S. 101 was 1,022.

June, 1954 The last year that 8th graders graduate from P.S. 101Q. The school truncates to a K-6 model beginning in the 1954-55 school year. Enrollment at this time was around 900

September 1, 1954 There are 900 children registered at P.S. 101.

September, 1998 Pre-K is added.

Septmber, 2014 Enrollment is 585, Pre-K - 6th.

Interesting Fact: When the current building first opened, and for many years after the fact, there was a library across the street where an apartment building now stands.
